Stan Wawrinka reaches the sixteenth finals at the US Open. The Vaud native prevailed against Argentinian Thomas Martin Etcheverry in four sets 7: 6 (8: 6), 6: 7 (7: 9), 6: 3, 6: 2 and now meets Jannik Sinner, sixth in the world rankings .

The task against the Italian Sinner is as difficult as the one a few weeks ago in the 3rd round of Wimbledon, when he also unsuccessfully challenged Novak Djokovic after beating Etcheverry. The 22-year-old Sinner clearly won the two duels this year with Wawrinka: 6: 1, 6: 3 in Rotterdam and 6: 1, 6: 4 in Indian Wells. After all, the only encounter between the two at the US Open 2019 went to the Swiss.

Wawrinka will need to improve on the match he showed against Etcheverry. Although the Vaud native convinced with some of his brilliant shots, which the numerous spectators in the Stan-the-Man shirt wanted to see, too often there was a lack of consistency, especially in the first two sets. The forces he expended in over three and a half hours against Etcheverry on Court 17, the fourth largest at the Flushing Meadows facility, may be lacking in the third round.

Despite a few mistakes, Wawrinka never lost his nerve and clearly dominated the match after losing the second set. The 38-year-old ended the game with an ace and advanced to the third round of the US Open as the oldest player since Jimmy Connors in 1991. (kat/sda)
