United States Dominates New Zealand to Secure a Victory in World Cup Debut

Winning debut for the United States in the World Cup. Beat New Zealand 99 to 72. The USA closed the match with much better shooting percentages, both inside the arc (27/41; 65%) and from outside (8/18; 44%), while New Zealanders stopped at 40% from two (18/46) and 32% from three (9/28). Even in rebounding the States had the upper hand with 41 caught, 5 in attack and 36 in defense, against 33 of Ili and his companions. The same was true for assists, Steve Kerr’s men dispatched 23, while only 13 were those of New Zealand.

REPORT CARDS

USA

Tyrese Haliburton: 7 – He is one of the authors of the USA’s initial change of pace, in the second half he also invents some top ten assists. He finishes with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Mikal Bridges: 6 – He fails to affect as he should especially in the early stages of the game. 7 points and 4 rebounds.

Cameron Johnson: 6 – He has different responsibilities than Bridges, but he too is a bit subdued.

Brandon Ingram: 5.5 – Debut not exactly to be framed, struggles to find the bottom of the retina and in fact closes with 1 out of 4 from the field.

Josh Hart: 6 – Contributes to rebound and defense, does its thing. That’s 5 points and 4 rebounds for him.

Years Jackson: 7 – He takes a while to get going but when he does he makes himself very useful on both sides of the field. He then comes out for 5 fouls without influencing the course of the match, but in the future, in a possible important match, he cannot afford these naiveties.

Walker Kessler: SV

Jalen Brunson: 7 – He opens the dance, but then gets stuck a bit. Little by little he manages to get back into the game and records 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Anthony Edwards: 7.5 – Like most of the team, he struggles at the start, but when he lights up, nobody can stop him anymore, 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Bobby Portis JR: 6.5 – A few minutes on the pitch, but quality.

Paolo Banchero: 8 – Performance that moves away from any canon of a rookie. When he enters the field he turns the game around, in attack and defense. Shooting is surgical: 8 out of 6 from two and 2 out of 2 from three.

Austin Reaves: 7 – He too has a significant impact on the match, from dynamism to the offensive phase and brings 12 points and 6 assists to the cause.

Coach Kerr: 7 – Remains calm, perhaps even too much, when the team is in difficulty, then gets the right substitutions right at the right time and wins without having to squeeze anyone for more than 25 minutes.

NEW ZELAND

Reuben The Sky: 6 – A bit like the rest of the team starts well and then starts firing blanks. He finishes with 15 made and 6 of 16 from the field.

Shea Or: 6.5 – The team loads on his shoulders in the first few minutes, but then falls inexorably. 12 points and 5 rebounds.

Izayah Le’Afa: 5.5 Very inaccurate shooting, also due to the different forcings. 3 of 11 from the field and 9 scoring points.

Taylor Britt: SV

Jordan Ngatai: 5- One of New Zealand’s worst, never enters the game. 0 points and 3 turnovers.

Hyrum Harris: SV

Walter James Brown: SV

Yannick Wetzell: 6 – He tries to assert himself against the US big men, he doesn’t come out badly: 10 points and 4 out of 8 shooting.

Flynn Cameron: 5.5 – Evening not the best for shooting, 1 out of 4 from two and 1 out of 5 from three.

Tohi Smith-Milner: 5.5 – In the few minutes on the pitch he does what he can, 3 points all made for free throws.

Isaac Photo: 5.5 – He suffers against the US longs and struggles to find the square.

Coach Cameron: 6 – He fielded an energetic team that dominated the first few minutes, but then was unable to stem the US advance in any way.
