Union Leaders Charged with Concealment in Marita Verón Kidnapping Case

Two union leaders from Tucumán were charged in the case for the kidnapping of Marita Verón. They are Norberto Manzano and Carlos Alberto Rojas, general secretaries of the National Association of Water and Energy Hierarchical Personnel (Apjae) and of Tucumán respectively, who were charged with the crime of concealment.

Both are suspected of hiding or omitting the existence of a folder that contained photos of the lifeless body of the young woman who disappeared in 2002. Both Manzano and Rojas did not testify before the federal prosecutor, Agustín Chit, and presented briefs.

According to the accusation, in March of this year a meeting of the Association of Hierarchical Water and Energy Personnel took place in Tucumán, on which occasion Manzano stated that he had that folder with the photos of the dead Marita. The head of the national union, according to the line of investigation, had received the documentation from Rojas, the leader of the province.

The lawyer in the lawsuit, Carlos Garmendia, told La Gaceta that Manzano used the folder against the then head of Luz y Fuerza in Tucumán Julio Luna in a bid for members. “It was proven that the meeting existed and that Manzano took possession of that folder,” he said.

The hypothesis that prosecutor Chit handles is that Marita’s body had been transferred at first to the headquarters of the Luz y Fuerza union and then to the morgue of the Luz Médica clinic, in the city of San Miguel de Tucumán. The young woman’s body would have been transferred from La Rioja, where she was being exploited by a prostitution network, to Tucumán.

In this new stage of the investigation that has been going on for more than 20 years, the complaint ratified the link between the unionist Julio Luna, who died in 2020, with Rubén “La Chancha” Ale, who died this year. Ale was the leader of the Ale clan, an organization related to the kidnapping of the young woman that occurred in April 2002 and who was accused by Susana Trimarco, Marita’s mother, from the beginning of the investigation.

On August 9, Trimarco and his lawyers announced at a press conference that the federal Justice had initiated a complementary investigation to the initial process, to determine the existence of a folder with images that proved that Marita was dead.

“I want to thank you for being here and interested in this great fight and for so many years of my life. This is very sad. I have been processing it for 40 days and talking with Mica (his granddaughter, Marita’s daughter). It is very sad for us, very painful, but I always told you that I am going to fight so that the truth is known and what happened to Marita,” said Trimarco.

He added that “this has been a very uneven fight. It is known how this organized and perverse mafia is that destroys families like mine and we are not going to stop so that one by one they pay for what they did with my daughter.”
