The hope was minimal, now there is sad certainty. Tijl De Decker, Belgian cycling talent from the Lotto-Dstny racing team, did not survive the emergency operation and died after his accident. The 22-year-old is the second fatality in his sport this year.

The sad news came on Friday afternoon. The Belgian cycling talent Tijl De Decker has died as a result of his serious training accident. “Despite the best efforts of the hospital staff, Tijl did not survive the operation and lost his fight this morning,” World Tour team Lotto-Dstny said on its website.

The 22-year-old collided with a car in front of him on Wednesday and, according to media reports, had lost a lot of blood. After an emergency operation in Lier, De Decker was transferred to the nearby university hospital in his hometown of Antwerp.

“We are shocked by the loss of our driver,” said Lotto boss Stéphane Heulot. “We will always remember him as a talented young rider and a warm and friendly person off the bike,” he added.

De Decker, who only joined the Lotto team this year, was considered a great classic and sprint talent. He finished fourth in the junior version of Frankfurt-Eschborn that year and won the U23 edition of Paris-Roubaix a week later. Last Sunday he also finished fourth in the Belgian Championships in the U23 category.

De Decker the second fatality

De Decker is the second fatality in cycling this year. It was only in June that the Swiss professional cyclist Gino Mäder and the American Magnus Sheffield were involved in a serious fall on the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse. The 26-year-old girl from Team Bahrain-Victorious later succumbed to his injuries.

Both riders had fallen on a high-speed descent on the Albula Pass near St. Moritz and swept down a cliff. When the race doctor arrived within two minutes, only Sheffield was responsive. He was then taken to the hospital with bruises and a concussion. Any help came too late for girls.
