The statistics before the away game in Leipzig clearly spoke against Bremen, after all Werder had lost all of their six Bundesliga games in the Red Bull Arena. At the end of the seventh meeting there was at least one point. A 1-0 lead thanks to an own goal from Leipzig’s Nicolas Seiwald initially made the guests from the Weser even dream of more.

Praise from coach Werner

“We played an almost perfect first half because we were clearly the better team,” said captain Marco Friedl after the game. Coach Ole Werner could only congratulate his team on their performance, but also saw room for improvement: “Perhaps we could have played out one or two situations even better – but that’s complaining at a high level.”

In fact, Bremen did not allow a single shot on goal from Leipzig, who had been without ideas for a long time, in the regular playing time of the first half. In stoppage time, keeper Michael Zetterer had to intervene against Mohamed Simakan and especially Yussuf Poulsen.

After the break, RB came out stronger, had good chances and equalized in the 61st minute through Benjamin Sesko. “In the 20 minutes after the break, we were lucky that we didn’t concede the equalizer earlier,” admitted Friedl and emphasized: “If we play to our limits, we are a good team. We have shown that in the last few games and will have to repeat this even more often in the new season.”

Because there was more here, it also hurts today.

In stoppage time, Jens Stage could have secured an away win with a header, but a reflex from Peter Gulacsi prevented this. A scene that was still present for Werner after the game: “We still had chances at the back that we mourn, even if the draw is certainly the fair result.”

Weiser comments on his future

Mitchell Weiser missed the last half chance a little later. After a cross, he lost out in a tackle duel with Christopher Lenz. Afterwards, Weiser was torn about his assessment of the game: “We can be proud of how we played football here. But because there was more to it here, it also hurts today.”

At Sky Weiser also commented on his personal future. “I think there will be a decision next week.” The contract of the 30-year-old, who has been plowing Werder’s right side since 2021, expires in the summer. Weiser put the probability of staying in Bremen at “50:50”.

At the end of April, Werder’s head of professional football, Clemens Fritz, described a decision before the end of the season as “desirable”. This could now take place before the last match day – with an open outcome. Weiser’s 200th Bundesliga game could be a special one either way.
