SIX PODIUMS FOR ITALY

DANIELE PIRAN CONFIRMS ITSELF AS EUROPEAN CHAMPION

At the end of today’s finals at the Paralympic European Championships in Rotterdam (Ned), Italy conquers the VI2/3 European title with Daniele Piran and the bronze with Giovanni Maria Vaccaro. Fourth the world champion Matteo Panariello in VI1. In team trials 3 silvers and 1 bronze

The first day dedicated to the finals of the European Paralympic Championships in Rotterdam (Ned), marked by a strong wind that raged throughout the day on the field of the finals set up by the sea, led to Italy a haul of 6 medals.

Nel Visually Impaired 2/3 Daniele Piran confirms the European title won last year in Rome, while Giovanni Maria Vaccaro took the bronze. In the team trials silver came in the double recurve (Floreno-Mijno) and women’s compound (Sarti-Virgil), in men’s W1 doubles (Panella-Tonon) and bronze in the men’s double recurve (Travisani-Verzini).

Closing day tomorrow with Italy busy playing 8 more finals, five of which are valid for the continental title. All matches will be streamed live on the Rotterdam European Championship website.

THE AZZURRI FINALS – Great performance for the defending champion Daniele Piran in the Visually Impaired 2/3 category. The archer of the Arco Club Bolzano Vicentino, fresh from his silver medal at the World Championships in Pilsen, confirmed the continental title won last year in Rome on his first away match in blue. On this occasion the archer from Veneto got the better of the Belgian athlete Kathleen Muerrens 6-2 in the final. The podium is two-thirds Italian, because it was the bronze medalist in the same category Giovanni Maria Vaccaro. The athlete from Palermo cleared the Spaniard Adrian Orjales Vidal 6-0.

Instead, the possibility of Matthew Panariello to confirm the bronze won last year in the continental event in Rome in the category Visually Impaired 1 (blind). The archer from Livorno, winner of the world title in the Czech Republic a few weeks ago, was overtaken in the final for third place by the archer from Andorra, Jordi Casellas Albiol, who won 6-2.

The other finals of Italy involved the teams. To win the challenge that was worth the men’s open recurve bronze were Stefano Travisani and Giuseppe Verzini who overcame Poland (Chmielewksi, Ciszek) 6-2. The Italian duo immediately took up 4-0 managing the wind better than their opponents who closed the gap in the third set, but the Azzurri were able to close the match with the fourth set, earning the third step of the podium.

In the final for the women’s double recurve gold, Veronica Floreno and Elisabetta Mijno instead they suffered the return of Turkey (Eroglu, Sengul) who won first place in the play-off. The Azzurri were ahead 4-2, but failed to close the match with the third set, leaving the opponents the chance to win the match in the shoot off 5-4 (14-13).

Very similar situation in the W1 men’s doubles final, where Maurizio Panella and Paolo Tonon failed to manage the advantage accumulated after the first two volleys, allowing Turkey (Aydin, Hekimoglu) to return to the game with the third set and to overtake in the fourth and final volley, closing the match for first place in them in favor of a single point: 127-126.

Turkey (Cure, Yorulmaz) also fatal in the final for the women’s double compound gold, where Eleonora Sarti and Maria Andrea Virgilio they didn’t handle the wind like their rivals. Only in the third set did the Italians do better than the Turks, when the latter had already accumulated a substantial advantage which led them to win 126-108.

PLAN – Tomorrow, Sunday 20 August, the final day of the European Championships with another 8 finals for Italy, three with mixed teams, all valid for the continental title and five individual, of which three for gold and two for bronze. The challenges will be streamed live on the organizing committee website.
