Telethon Sports Meeting in Antofagasta Unites Over 100 Athletes from Northern Chile

The Telethon sports meeting brings together more than 100 athletes from Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta and Calama, who will compete in swimming, handball and badminton.

The Instituto Teletón de Antofagasta inaugurated the fourth and last date of the sports and training meeting “Campeones Sin límites”, organized by Teletón, Ripley and Canal 13, which aims to make visible and support adapted sports and patients who practice it as part of their rehabilitation and inclusion processes.

The championship was held until last Thursday at the city’s Teletón institute and at the Antofagasta Municipal School Sports Complex, and in this, Delegations from the Teletón de Arica institutes participate, with 30 representatives; from Iquique, with 36; from Calama with 25; and from Antofagasta with 80 participants.

The director of the Teletón de Antofagasta institute, Sebastián Azares, highlighted the importance of events like this being held in regions. “It is a pride to host Campeones Sin Límites. The team, users and families are very happy, because what we do in regions is visible. It is a sign of decentralization, and it is highly valued and appreciated by all.”

The “Campeones Sin Límites” tournament has been taking place since May with similar matches held in Coquimbo, Santiago and Temuco, and has had the participation of more than 400 athletes who have been measured in eight different disciplines, including table tennis, swimming, wheelchair basketball and soccer 7.

In this regard, the coordinator of the Area of ​​Exercise and Adapted Sports (UEDA) of Teletón, Cristian Cherif, highlighted that these meetings “they promote inclusion through sport, help improve self-esteem and are an integral complement, not just physical. Our users, through sports, have realized that they are capable of breaking limits and can become more autonomous. They see themselves and say: I am capable”, explains the coordinator.

In this latest edition of the championship, athletes from the Norte Grande institutes will compete in swimming, wheelchair handball and badminton. Precisely in this last discipline, the Institute of Antofagasta It has a representative already classified for the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. She is Krishna Caimanque, who at only 17 years old will participate in the most important sporting event in the history of Chile.

At the inauguration, Estefanía Carvajal, captain of the Teletón Antofagasta handball team, was present. The mother of four children, after suffering an accident, she became a Telethon patient. For her, sport has marked a before and after in her life. “I was born again. With sport I saw a light, I saw that I had to keep moving forward, that he had daughters, that he had a family… I realized that my accident did not kill me, but rather that I continue to feel and live,” Estefanía commented.

Ripley’s northern zone manager, Reinaldo Cousins, commented that this meeting began as a project to improve people’s quality of life and added that “in total there have been four dates, where more than 400 athletes from all over the country have shown their talent and desire to go further, we are very grateful to them, their families and of course the Ripley family that has participated in all the days, attending and encouraging the participants. We are very proud of what we have done with Teletón and Canal 13.

“Campeones Sin Límites” is a meeting instance that allows boys, girls and young users of Teletón to be part of a competition that encourages them to, in addition to practicing sports, participate in their communities and schools, and that helps them create bonds, achieve goals and improve their socialization and coexistence skills.
