Lars Veldwijk has only been removed from the selection for the time being by his South Korean club Suwon FC. The Dutchman was caught driving under the influence in the capital Seoul on Monday.

“Because he committed an unforgivable act when the team is in the relegation zone, we have immediately excluded him from participation in training and matches,” Suwon FC writes on its website on Tuesday.

The contract of 31-year-old Veldwijk will not be torn up for the time being, because according to Suwon FC it “does not help to prevent a recurrence in the future”. The club will decide on Thursday whether or not the striker can stay. Last year, competitor Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors terminated player Takahiro Kunimoto’s contract for driving under the influence.

Veldwijk was arrested on Monday at 4 a.m. local time. After the police found with the help of a breathalyzer that the player had drunk too much, his driver’s license was confiscated.

“We have notified the South Korean Football Association and intend to take action,” Suwon FC writes. “We apologize for causing concern to the fans who have always supported and loved Suwon FC and Lars.”

Veldwijk has been playing in South Korea since 2020

Veldwijk has been playing for Suwon FC since the summer of 2020. Before that he was active for half a year at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. The attacker is under contract with Suwon FC until the end of 2024.

In the Netherlands, Veldwijk played for Excelsior, PEC Zwolle, FC Groningen and Sparta Rotterdam, among others. The seven-time South African international previously had a relationship with presenter Monica Geuze.
