Spanish Badminton Falls Just Short of Historic Medal in European Under-17 Team Championship

It could not be. Spanish badminton has been on the verge of making history, falling in the quarterfinals of the European Under-17 Team Championship against the Czech Republic team (3-1), thus close to the first Spanish medal in this competition.

An even tie was expected, as it was, and once again the details that are usually decisive in competitions of this level tipped the balance on the side of the Czech team. The team led by Ernesto García, president of CB Pitiús, along with Ibizan Vicent Martínez, island badminton delegate, and Carlos Longo had the men’s singles, the men’s doubles and the mixed doubles as strong points, but only the first of them fell on the Spanish side.

In addition to Vicent Martínez, four Ibizan midfielders have made up the Spanish youth team in Lithuania, which from today will focus on the individual tournament.

Ismael Oballe, the brothers Yulien and Yaidel Gil and Victoria Gutiérrez have had an outstanding participation in the team competition, where Spain signed an immaculate group stage finishing in first position with four victories. Over the weekend they made their debut in an international tournament with the under-17 national team Victoria Gutiérrez and Yulien Gil and Ismael Oballe in the men’s doubles.

Both had the difficult mission yesterday of equalizing the tie against the Czechs, but the Ibizan couple was surprised by MarekČCepela and Adam Srnec, falling 21-15 and 21-16 and certifying the defeat of Spain. From now on he plays the revenge in the individual tournament.
