Jannik Sinner has never lost a match against a compatriot on the ATP Tour. The Sesto defended this impressive series on Wednesday at the Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto (local time) thanks to a prestigious win against Matteo Berrettini (ATP 38).

Although both actors have been among the top cracks on the tour for years, they have never met. The interest in the game between Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini was all the greater. The latter had said just a few days ago that he was suffering from depression and was even thinking of quitting. The reason for this was the many injuries that made him slip out of the top 30 in the world rankings. Since the tournament in Wimbledon, the 27-year-old has been back to his old self. He also proved that on Tuesday in Toronto.

He demanded everything from Sinner for a long time, but was unable to gain the advantage he deserved given the shares in the game. The South Tyrolean punished this in the style of a top player and ultimately won 6:4 and 6:3.

The match on the packed Grandstand started as expected: hard fought. Berrettini put on a lot of pressure with his forehand, Sinner was mostly put on the defensive. And because the serve was stuck, he faced seven breakballs in the first three service games. However, the sextner kept a cool head, circled strong second serves into the field and destroyed all opportunities. The missed chances scratched Berrettini’s self-confidence, who threw in a horror game when the score was 4: 5: two double errors, a pathetic forehand error – and the set was gone. The Romans were the better player over long stretches.

Sinner knows no mercy

The way the passage was lost, Berrettini crashed into a hole. Sinner, on the other hand, really flourished. Suddenly all returns were in the field, every groundstroke landed a few centimeters from the baseline and the serve went much better. The fact that it was quickly 3-0 in his favor was also due to Berrettini, who gave up his serve after 40-0 and several forehand errors in a row. Sinner skillfully defended the lead he had gained: Berrettini nibbled on a break here and there, but Darren Cahill’s protégé was wide awake in the important moments. The last service game was an example of this: Two aces and two more winning strokes meant the end of the game after exactly 90 minutes. Sinner has now won all nine matches against Italian players.

In the round of 16 there is now a duel with another big name: The three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray (ATP 40), who eliminated Lorenzo Sonego 7: 6 and 6: 0 in the first round, defeated the Australian Max Purcell (ATP 78) with 7: 6, 3: 6 and 7: 5. It is not yet known when the match will take place on Thursday.
