Scugnizzi per Semper: The Story of Juvecaserta, Italy’s 1991 Basketball Champions

The docuseries “Scugnizzi per Semper” on the story of Juvecaserta, the Italian champions in 1991, will be broadcast on Rai 2 from 21 August. Six episodes (broadcast in prime time on 21, 24 and 25 August), five thousand minutes of interviews and reconstructions to tell the first and only historic success of a team from southern Italy in the top basketball league.

Over the course of the six episodes, the docuseries traces the various sporting, but also and above all human stages of the team of street urchins led by Nando Gentile and Enzo Esposito, two of the best Italian players of the 1990s. From the construction of the Palamaggiò in just 100 days to the exhilarating victories of the Casertans, passing through the painful defeats (in the Italian and European finals), up to the conquest of the Scudetto in 1991, which arrived in the first championship without the Brazilian champion Oscar Schmidt.

The authors Gianni Costantino, Vincenzo Cascone and Sante Roperto tell the story of an entire community that has rallied around the black and white team, which was a symbol of the redemption of the South against the North. Scugnizzi per semper not only tells the sporting epic but it is also a beautiful story of authentic, strong, contrasting and inevitably indelible feelings, even in the face of the passage of time.

To tell this story today are those same Scugnizzi and that world of Caserta that revolved around them, but also the many opponents faced on the parquet – above all the giants of Olimpia Milano – as well as the journalists and commentators who at the time narrated the events of basketball Italian and Caserta.
