Although Santiago Giménez has extended his contract with Feyenoord, the striker cannot yet rule out a departure one hundred percent. He realizes that football is unpredictable and that a club can come along with an amount that Feyenoord cannot say ‘no’ to. If it is up to him, he will stay with Feyenoord.

“Yes, anything can happen in football. One day you are here, the next there. It depends more on the clubs than on the player. A side may come with an offer that cannot be refused. You know never,” Gimenez told ESPN. He himself is happy in Rotterdam. “I am grateful to the club. Although I still had a contract, they decided to give me a better contract. This is the club that opened the doors for me.”

“It’s my first club in Europe. Every day I fall more in love with this team and the people who welcomed me in a great way. Every weekend they support us again. Even though we lost, we still got a round of applause against PSV. The people here are impressive. This club is really great,” concludes the Mexican.

Although he indicates that he wants to stay with Feyenoord, his statements about the chance of a departure are being picked up in Portugal. “Attention, Benfica,” writes the Portuguese News by the Minute for example in an article about the rulings. Also on Twitter, several Portuguese supporters of Benfica react enthusiastically to the tweet in which ESPN shares the interview. Benfica sees Giménez as a potential successor to Gonçalo Ramos, who is on his way to Paris Saint-Germain.
