Rock climbing Indonesia is now worldwide. It is not surprising that Indonesia has ambitions to pursue gold in Indonesia 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

The sport of rock climbing entered Indonesia around the 1960s, with Indonesian Army troops using Cliff 48 Citatah, Bandung, West Java, as a training ground.

Rock climbing has grown in the following decades. Artificial cliff or climbing wall (wall climbing) began to be made in Indonesia in 1988.

The construction of the first wall climbing was followed by the formation of the Indonesian Mountain Climbers Federation (FPTGI) which changed to the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (FPTI) in 1992.

Since then, Indonesian climbers have recorded their names on the victory podium. Agung Ethi Hendrawati, Yuyun Yuniar, Evi Neliwati, Ronald Mamarimbing, achieved great achievements on the world stage.

These achievements are proof that Indonesia has been great at rock climbing, especially speed numbers, in the last two decades.

This slick achievement has continued until now with new names, starting from the emergence of Aspar Jaelolo, Aries Susanti Rahayu, Veddriq Leonardo, Kiromal Katibin, to Rajiah Sallsabillah.

These athletes are like the ‘golden generation of the Indonesian speed team’ which helped Merah Putih win three gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang.

The title of world number speed champion scored by Aries Susanti Rahayu at the 2018 IFSC World Cup in Chongqing, China, has made the name rock climbing even more popular in Indonesia. At that time, Aries beat Elena Timofeeva from Russia with a record time of 7.51 seconds.

Not only that, in the last three years, the combined points for male and female speed athletes have placed Indonesia at the top of the IFSC standings.

“The moment we got the most was when our friends presented three gold medals at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games,” said FPTI Advisory Board Sapto Hardiono.

“Because some friends in the regions, in clubs and in the community got a lot of enthusiasts after the 2018 Asian Games, so they ended up being a bit overwhelmed in carrying out coaching, especially the juniors because there were so many enthusiasts,” said Sapto added.

Along with the great achievements of speed athletes, the prestige of rock climbing began to increase in Indonesia.

The Indonesian rock climbing team even has the opportunity to make new history in Paris 2024, becoming the first non-badminton sport to win a gold medal at the Olympics.

At the 2024 Olympics, which will be held from 26 July to 11 August 2024, the rock climbing event will take place on 5-10 August.

At that moment, the Red and White Team also had the ambition to achieve their dream of bringing home an Olympic gold medal. Currently, Indonesia is one of the forces to be reckoned with in rock climbing, especially in men’s and women’s speed numbers.

Indonesian climbers from the men’s and women’s categories not only often climb the podium in world-level tournaments, but also break records.

Veddriq Leonardo is the men’s world speed record holder to date. Veddriq set the record when he recorded a time of 4.90 seconds at the IFSC World Cup in Seoul, South Korea, April 28, 2023.
