When politics deteriorates fair competition

Throughout the history of the modern international Olympic movement, Italy has experienced not only a feeling of pride in its athletes, but also moments of deep concern. In fact, it cannot be forgotten that in 2021, during the preparations for the Tokyo Olympics, a scandal erupted which risked depriving the Italian team of its flag and its anthem. The International Olympic Committee opposed the creation of a body which, in its view, could interfere with the independence of the National Olympic Committee.

A law was passed, according to which the Cabinet of Ministers would have supervisory authority over the allocation of money to athletes and the use of funds by the National Olympic Committee (NOC). But the president, Giovanni Malagò, considered it an act contrary to the Olympic Charter and to the principle that the organs of a state cannot interfere in sporting affairs.

Furthermore, the president of the NOC himself had to publicly declare that the IOC was worried about the turnaround undertaken and that this excessive zeal on the part of the state could have provoked sanctions against Italy, up to the deprivation of the flag and anthem.

All this should make us reflect on the situation of the Russian and Belarusian teams. The difference is that today, the political interests of some states have become preponderant, even dictating their conditions within the global Olympic movement. They not only demand the introduction of a neutral status for Russians, but also a ban on participation in all international competitions.

The provisions of the Olympic Charter are trampled on and forgotten. Unfair competition, doping scandals, transgender participants, violations of traditional ethics among athletes. The evident violations of the fundamental principles of world sport make the veto on the flag and on the national anthem appear as the most harmless of the actions that can be faced.

Two years ago reason and tradition prevailed over emotions, so the situation was resolved and the Italian athletes took to the field displaying their flag and proudly listening to the national anthem.

How do state governments consider themselves, at this moment, authorized to impose their conditions on the international sporting community? Politics is really undermining the whole system and the principles of fair competition, the ethical behavioral system and the destiny of talented athletes are gradually wearing out.
