Novak Djokovic tackles the US Open as the top favorite
As the organizers of the US Open announced a few hours after the draw, the men’s matches in the lower half will take place on Monday. Thus, the 23-time major winner Novak Djokovic gets into the action at the last Grand Slam event of the year on the first day of the tournament. The 36-year-old meets Alexandre Muller at the start and would return to world number one if he beat the Frenchman after the US Open.
It will also be exciting from an Austrian point of view on Monday, as both Dominic Thiem (against Alexander Bublik) and Sebastian Ofner (against Nuno Borges) will be in action. From an international point of view, the encounter between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Milos Raonic marks the highlight of the first day.
Koepfer and Hanfmann with Herculean tasks
Meanwhile, the four fixed main draw participants from Germany all only play on Tuesday. The biggest task awaits Dominik Koepfer: The 29-year-old will start with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Yannick Hanfmann is also a blatant outsider in his match against Jannik Sinner, Daniel Altmaier (against Constant Lestienne) and especially Alexander Zverev (against Aleksandar Vukic) can calculate better chances.
In contrast to the men, the women start with the top half. World number one Iga Swiatek (against Rebecca Peterson) will play on Monday, as will Elena Rybakina (against Marta Kostyuk) and Austria’s only Julia Grabher (against Xiyu Wang). The three German main draw participants Tamara Korpatsch (against Irina-Camelia Begu), Anna-Lena Friedsam (against Elina Svitolina) and Tatjana Maria (against Petra Martic) will play their first round games on Tuesday.
