National coach Ronald Koeman has included Micky van de Ven and Ian Maatsen in the provisional selection of the Dutch national team for the European Championship qualifiers against Greece and Ireland next month.

Defender Van de Ven recently made a mega transfer from VfL Wolfsburg to Tottenham Hotspur, which pays at least 40 million euros for him. The 22-year-old former player of FC Volendam was directly in the base with the Londoners last weekend in the first Premier League round. Van de Ven was already part of the provisional Orange selection for the World Cup at the end of last year, but was dropped.

Maatsen is a completely new face: the 21-year-old Chelsea player caused a furore last season as a wingback at Burnley, which hired him from ‘The Blues’. Maatsen is going for his chance at Stamford Bridge this year: last weekend, the former Feyenoord and PSV youth player came in against Liverpool.

The 29 players in the pre-selection also include 101-time international Daley Blind, who recently signed with Girona. Ajax players Steven Berghuis and Kenneth Taylor, among others, are conspicuous by their absence. Georginio Wijnaldum, who has ended up on a side track at Paris Saint-Germain, is also missing.

Memphis Depay celebrates his comeback after missing the Nations League final round through injury. The 29-year-old attacker guided Atlético Madrid at the beginning of this week with a beautiful goal to a league victory over Granada.

The final selection for the first international matches of the season will be announced on Friday 1 September.

The Netherlands took three points from two games

The Netherlands will play against Greece on September 7 at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven. Three days later a visit to Ireland follows.

The Orange started the European Championship qualification in March with a very painful 4-0 defeat at France. Then they won 3-0 against the tiny Gibraltar.

In June, the Netherlands finished last in the Nations League final round due to defeats against Croatia and Italy. Thanks to the good performance in the group stage of the Nations League, the Orange has set up a safety net for itself: if you miss out on a direct European Championship ticket (or a place in the top two of the group), the Netherlands may participate in the spring of 2024 the playoffs.

Next year’s European Championship will be played in Germany between June 14 and July 14. During the previous European Championship final round, the Dutch lost in the eighth final against the Czech Republic: 0-2.
