MLB Investigating Allegations Against Tampa Bay Rays’ Wander Franco

Despite the good year of Tampa Bay Rays in the 2023 season, the team has announced through a statement, that Major League Baseball is investigating social media posts about the Dominican star shortstop Wander Franco that were published on Sunday, where they accuse him of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor.

“During today’s game, we learned about the messages on social networks that are circulating in relation to Wander Franco,” the club said. “We take the situation seriously and are in close contact with Major League Baseball as it conducts its due diligence.”

On Sunday, posts on social media went viral alleging that Franco, 22, had had an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The Dominican did not play in the Rays’ 9-2 loss to the Guardians earlier in the afternoon after the allegations were triggered.

The Rays gave Franco an 11-year, $82 million contract in November 2021, with a team option for 2033 that could make the deal worth as much as $223 million.

Franco made his first All-Star Game this year and has had a good season on the field. He is hitting .281 with 17 home runs, 58 RBIs and 30 stolen bases in 112 games for a team in line to make the postseason.

The Rays also elected to bench Franco for two games in July in response to his behavior with his teammates and how he will deal with frustration. For the moment, it is expected that the Dominican will not make the trip for the next series of matches they will play against San Francisco Giants.
