Mainz Coach Bo Svensson Reduces Yellow Card Quota and Sets Sights on Squad Completion

The hot topic is no longer. In 2021/22, the impartial Mainz coach Bo Svensson showed yellow cards seven times, and only three times last season.

When the conversation at the team hotel during the training camp in Schladming (Austria) turned to the topic of referees, Svensson was overjoyed. “Finally someone is addressing it,” he said, and laughed. In January 2022, the Dane was the first Bundesliga coach to serve a suspension after four yellow cards, and he has now drastically reduced his yellow card quota. Since the summer of 2019, coaches can also be warned.

In the kicker interview, Svensson also makes it clear that the composition of the squad will not be complete when the left-back he is primarily looking for has arrived. So far, central defender Sepp van den Berg, midfielder Tom Krauss and goalkeeper Daniel Batz have been signed.

The secret A solution still needs time

The ambitious Svensson will not be completely happy even after the arrival of the left-back. The FSV is currently trying to implement the A solution, similar to van den Berg and Krauss, which takes time. The name of the candidate is still secret. When asked if all coaching wishes would be fulfilled afterwards, Svensson replied: “Definitely a few essentials. On September 1, the squad will probably look different than it is now. But many will not leave or join.”

In the kicker interview of the Thursday edition (available digitally from Wednesday evening as eMagazine) Svensson also tells what is particularly important to him in the introductory talks with players, how disappointing the four defeats were shortly before the end of the season and how he looks forward to the red suspension in the DFB Cup.
