A group with Yves Lampaert, Nils Politt and Brandon McNulty took off in the full final and tried to avoid a bunch sprint. The trio turned well and gathered a lead of about 15 seconds. In the peloton it was the troops of Mads Pedersen and Dylan Groenewegen who called the shots.

The peloton constantly had the three in their sights, but it was still close. In the end it was only in the last hundred meters that a strong Mads Pedersen passed over Yves Lampaert and co. Danny van Poppel and Elia Viviani came very close to winning with their last jump, but eventually had to be satisfied with second and third place. Just like Lampaert, who eventually finished sixth. Arnaud De Lie followed in seventh place.

It is the second victory for Pedersen in two days, because on Saturday he hit another double in his own country. He won the final time trial in the Tour of Denmark and thus also won the final classification. Afterwards he traveled straight to Hamburg. At the beginning of this month, the powerhouse finished fourth in the road race at the World Cup in Glasgow.

Pedersen is the successor to the Austrian Marco Haller on the honors list in Hamburg. Last year, he narrowly held off Wout van Aert and Quinten Hermans. With Johan Museeuw (2002) there is only one Belgian on the record of the German cycling classic.
