Elly Dela Cruz He went 4 for 4 with a double, an RBI, three runs scored and four stolen bases in the Reds’ 7-2 win Thursday over the Dodgers and also walked one in front of 53,527 in Los Angeles.

“He’s that classic five-tool player,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “And there’s nothing on the baseball field that he can’t do. You try to keep guys like that in line.

Dámaso García, of the Blue Jays, was the first Dominican to steal four bases against the A’s at Exhibición Stadium in Toronto on April 25, 1984.

Luis Poland in Cleveland (July 26, 1994 with Yankees) and in Chicago (July 1, 1992 with Angels) is the only one of the Dominicans who has stolen four bases in a game twice in one season.

Jean Segura of the Mariners had been the most recent with four steals in a game when he did it on May 15, 2018 against the Rangers in Seattle.

Willy Taveras holds the record for Dominican stealers in a game with five, playing for the Rockies at the White Sox stadium on July 14, 2008.

De La Cruz reached base five times, his steals would lead him to score three runs in the game, marking the third time this season he accomplished that feat. It also marked the star shortstop’s first four-hit game of the season and his third game with three or more hits.

“I like playing here. “I feel comfortable,” De La Cruz said. “Because this is my city

De La Cruz now has a whopping 30 stolen bases on the season following his first four-steal performance, 13 ahead of the next closest player (José Caballero).

Through 44 games, De La Cruz already has 30 steals (more than 18 MLB teams) and is on pace for 110 steals on the season. The last time it happened was in 1985, when the Cardinals’ Vince Coleman stole 110 bases.

Before Thursday, the last Reds player with four steals in a game was Billy Hamilton in 2016.

Will Benson led off the game with a home run to right field off Tyler Glasnow. De La Cruz followed with a grounder single to the right side and stole second base. With two outs, he scored on Tyler Stephenson’s RBI double to make it 2-0.

Leading off the third inning, De La Cruz hit a 1-2 breaking ball the other way for a ground-rule double to left field. After stealing third base, he easily scored on Stephenson’s RBI single.

De La Cruz walked with one out in the fifth inning before quickly stealing second and third base. He scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Batting right-handed against Nick Ramirez in the seventh, he added a two-out single to right field, but was caught stealing to end the inning. “Delayed robbery. I tried, but they caught me,” he said.

A night like this was much needed for the Reds, who lost 15 of 19 games. De La Cruz came in batting .175 with 15 strikeouts in his previous 11 games. He was given a partial day off – his first of the season – from Sunday’s game at Arizona.

De La Cruz now has four four-hit games in his career. Thursday’s was the first since last July 30, also against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. In three games at Chavez Ravine last season, he hit .429 with one home run.
