LA NUEVA ESPAÑA golf tournament: the action begins in La Llorea

The twenty-ninth edition of the LA NUEVA ESPAÑA golf tournament, which begins today, brings together more than half a thousand players at the La Llorea municipal course in Gijón. The first ones will have to get up early today because the first start time is at 8.30 in the morning and the competition will last until 14.30. As in previous editions and for many years now, this is the only four-day tournament and the one with the highest participation of all those held throughout the year.

This was recalled yesterday at the tournament presentation by the course manager, Arturo Zarauza: “We are facing the mythical event in the municipal golf calendar. Registration is not closed for every day, but there will be around 550 players with all that this implies in the organization: departure times, competition committee taking the players’ times, care of the field. It is a complicated organization but we have experience.”

Zarauza is happy with the state of the field. “He is spectacular, better than ever,” he says. According to him, “the players are going to find greens with a quality that they have never seen in the month of August on this course. August is a very difficult month because there are a lot of players and the greens are not in perfect condition, but this year is going to be the best”. Based on the experience of previous years, Zarauza estimates that “between 30 and 35 percent of the players will be from outside Asturias, there are even people who schedule their vacations to be able to participate.” If the percentage of previous years is maintained, “80 percent of the participants are men and the rest are women.

Registration closes at 10 a.m. the day before. That is, at 10 today registrations to play tomorrow Wednesday close, and so on. As usual, on the first day the highest handicaps will come out first, up to 30, and then the lowest, but on the following day the order will be reversed, which will happen on two more occasions. The weather will be favorable to the participants, although, according to Arturo Zarauza, “many people are very attentive to the forecasts when registering.”

The tournament was officially presented yesterday at a ceremony attended by the Councilor for Sports, Jorge Pañeda; the director of the Private Banking office of Unicaja Banco, Enrique Álvarez, and the director of business development of LA NUEVA ESPAÑA, Francisco Costales. Pañeda assured that “it is the quintessential summer tournament in Gijón in the best place there is to play, the influx is guaranteed and it is also a tournament in pairs, which is also attractive because there are not many of these characteristics.” The councilor highlighted: «We are in a month of August with many incentives for people to enjoy, there is the Trade Fair, the horse riding and the LA NUEVA ESPAÑA tournament is another of the attractions of the Gijón summer».
