Korean Badminton Team Strikes Gold at 2023 World Individual Badminton Championships

[배드민턴코리아] The Korean badminton team returned home in gold at the ‘2023 World Individual Badminton Championships’ (hereinafter referred to as the World Championships) held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Korean badminton team recorded three gold medals and one bronze medal at the World Championships, which ended on August 28 in Copenhagen, Denmark, recording the best performance ever. In particular, world No. 1 Ahn Se-young proved her skills once more by becoming the first Korean player to win a gold medal in the singles event since the World Championships were held in 1977.

In addition, Seo Seung-jae won two gold medals in the mixed doubles and men’s doubles events at the event. ‘King Kong Duo’ Kim So-young and Gong Hee-yong failed to claim the women’s doubles gold medal, but finished the tournament with a valuable bronze medal.

After returning to Korea, Kim Hak-kyun, coach of the national team, said, “To be honest, I couldn’t even think of winning three gold medals in this event. He turned the ball around, saying, “It was a good performance because the players worked hard.” Also, regarding the ‘2022 Hangzhou Asian Games’, which is less than a month away, “There is always a goal, but the process is important. There are 7 gold medals at stake in the Asian Games. If the opportunity arises, I will try to acquire more.”

Next, regarding Ahn Se-young, the representative of the badminton team, “I think she is the only player among the top 4 women’s singles players who has not stopped and continues to advance. I think it will be important whether you do it,” he advised.

Ahn Se-young, who achieved the world champion following the world ranking, responded to the interview with a bright face. Ahn Se-young said, “It was the first time I participated in the world rankings, so I felt a lot of pressure. It didn’t show, but she was having a hard time, and she was worried that she would be able to enjoy it well.”

Also, when asked about the next goal, “I want to say with confidence that the goal of the Asian Games is a gold medal. A higher goal is the Grand Slam. I will win the Asian Games, the Asian Championships, and the Olympics,” he said confidently.

With this event, Korea achieved the splendid feat of winning three gold medals in five events for the first time ever. The Korean badminton team plans to return to the Jincheon Athletes’ Village and continue their preparation for the Asian Games by participating in the ‘2023 China Open Badminton Championships (Super 1000)’ in September.
