Japan has continued the good line of the group stage on its way to the quarterfinals. In its first knockout match, it beat Norway 3-1. With 14 goals and barely 1 goal against, the Japanese women are a dangerous customer.

After the disappointing elimination in the eighth finals in 2019, Japan was eager for revenge. With the U20 world title in 2020, a new generation immediately stood up.

Against Norway, the Japanese women swallowed their very first goal against at this World Cup – a header by Guro Reiten – but the elimination in the eighth finals never came close.

An own goal by Ingrid Engen had given Japan a lead in gift wrapping. In the second half, Risa Shimizu and World Cup top scorer Hinata Miyazawa, who already scored 5 goals, took the win.

In the next round, Japan will face either Sweden or defending champion the United States.
