Schwerin/Ludwigslust (dpa/mv) – After a violent attack on a German of Kurdish origin in Lübtheen (Ludwigslut-Parchim district), the state security service in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has started investigations on suspicion of a politically motivated crime. As a police spokesman said on Tuesday, there is a cell phone video made by the victim immediately after the attack, which is also known to the German Press Agency. A woman with a baseball bat in her hand insults the man covered in blood and says, “Touch me and I’ll show you where your ship is going.”
The 42-year-old man, who also picked up the attackers’ car and two other people involved, was reportedly questioned again by the authorities on Tuesday about the events. The suspects have been identified, the police spokesman said.
The chairman of the Kurdish community in Germany, Ali Ertan Toprak, demanded in a statement from the police that the incident, which had already taken place on July 24, be clarified. The attackers shouldn’t believe they can get away with their crime. “The Kurdish community in Germany condemns the cowardly and racist attack and is shocked by the brutality of the attackers,” the statement said. During a medical examination, the victim was found to have bruises, a head laceration and a concussion, among other things.
Unlike the Kurdish community, the police initially did not classify the attack as racially motivated. According to a spokesman, the parties involved knew each other and argued with each other. A criminal complaint was filed on suspicion of serious bodily harm. According to a spokeswoman, the public prosecutor’s office in Schwerin was not involved.
According to the Kurdish community, weeks before the attack, the victim’s mobile phone was stolen from the courtyard of his home. An acquaintance of the alleged thief offered to return the device for a payment of 50 euros. In the subsequent meeting with three men and a woman, the victim was attacked and injured with poles and a baseball bat. The act of violence was only ended by the intervention of a neighbor.
