Hannes Wolf Appointed as Director for Youth, Training, and Development at DFB

After the separation from DFB managing director Oliver Bierhoff, the association closed one of the gaps that had arisen. Hannes Wolf takes over the youth work.

Former Bundesliga coach Hannes Wolf will be the new director for youth, training and development at the German Football Association (DFB). The 42-year-old will take on the newly created position with immediate effect, and according to the DFB, the role also includes young women. In addition, Wolf should keep his previous job as coach of the U20 national team.

“Hannes Wolf knows the structures in German football – both within the associations and in the clubs and professional leagues,” said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf. He has “proven in various functions that he can make a decisive difference in the development of youth football in Germany conceptually, strategically, but also pragmatically and above all with a high level of practical relevance and a lot of dedication and passion”.

Competence team around Wolf

A “competence team” around Wolf should also “give specific training tips for innovative talent promotion throughout Germany,” as the DFB announced. In addition to the ex-professionals Hanno Balitsch, Lars and Sven Bender and Sandro Wagner, the committee also includes Hermann Gerland, Peter Hermann, Sabine Loderer, Lena Lotzen, Nikola Ludwig and Daniel Stredak.

“We want to work hand in hand with all the bodies involved in training to improve training on the football pitches in this country,” said Wolf, who has been the coach of the DFB youth teams in the transition area since 2020. Previously, he had worked in the youth division of Borussia Dortmund and for the professional teams of VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV, Bayer Leverkusen and KRC Genk.

Kessler will probably take over as managing director

After the men’s World Cup debacle in Qatar, the DFB began restructuring its personnel structures. Rudi Völler will hold the post of sports director until the home European Championship in 2024. The DFB also made it clear that after the World Cup preliminary round in Australia “in the next few months” another director position for women’s football should be created.

After the end of the cooperation with Oliver Bierhoff in December, the association is still looking for a person for the sports management to manage the entire area. Uefa official Nadine Kessler is expected to take on this post. However, this has not yet been officially confirmed.
