The German basketball players missed out on winning the Supercup tournament in Hamburg. The DBB selection lost in overtime in the final against Canada.

Despite a strong Dennis Schröder and a two-digit lead in the meantime, the team of national coach Gordon Herbert Canada had to admit defeat on Sunday evening (08/13/2023) after extra time with 112:113 (101:101, 49:45).

“Games like this are important for us before the World Cup,” said Andreas Obst. “We slept a few times in defence, and we couldn’t do everything offensively either. We were too passive in some phases.” Johannes Voigtmann also emphasized the benefits of the game: “It’s a good learning process for us, we need games like this.”

Schröder on the bench in the closing stages

For Germany it was the first defeat in preparation for the World Cup. The German team had won against Canada on Wednesday in Berlin with 86:81. Schröder shone this time with 26 points, but was on the bench in the closing stages after five fouls. Without the Toronto Raptors’ point guard, the hosts gave up the lead.

In addition to Schröder, Daniel Theis, Franz Wagner, Johannes Thiemann, Maodo Lo and Andreas Obst scored in double figures for the DBB selection, which clearly won against China on Saturday with 107:58.

Now friendlies in Abu Dhabi

After the exhausting duel with Canada, Schröder and Co. now have two more days off before they leave Frankfurt am Main for Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. There are two more friendlies against title candidates USA and Greece next weekend.

The World Cup begins on August 25 in Okinawa with the clash against co-hosts Japan. Other preliminary round opponents are Finland and Australia.
