From Basketball to Boat Racing: Anna Miyazaki’s Inspiring Journey

The “Beautiful Boat Race” draws on the allure of women’s boat racers. This time, I will introduce Anna Miyazaki (25 = Saitama). After working for Niigata Albirex, a women’s basketball team, she turned to boat racing. Her older sister is Saori Miyazaki (27 = ENEOS), who has also been selected for the Japan Women’s Basketball Team. We will approach the real face of Miyazaki who struggles to lose to her older sister.

Anna Miyazaki turned from basketball

– What made you switch to boat racing?

Miyazaki: It was recommended by my father. I played for Niigata Albirex basketball for about two years. However, at 155 centimeters tall, I also felt the limit. I decided to take the boat racer test, which is small but not handicap. It wasn’t that I wanted to be great, but I passed the exam and decided to change careers.

-What is your position in basketball?

Miyazaki Guard. It’s the so-called control tower. I was competing on speed.

-How was your high school days?

Miyazaki Participated in the national tournament at Asuwa High School in Fukui Prefecture and finished in the top 16.

-My older sister is Saori Miyazaki, who has been selected as a member of the Japan Women’s Basketball Team.

Miyazaki: My older sister is 167cm tall and wears the same guard. She was also selected for the Asian Games. It’s encouraging that her sister is so supportive.

– How did you feel when you actually made your debut as a boat racer?

Miyazaki It’s not sweet. It’s hard. I made my debut in 2001 at Toda, my hometown, but at that time I fell into the water and stopped flying. It was a mess. It doesn’t work very well.

-Are basketball and boat racing completely different?

Miyazaki Basketball often goes the way you want it to. It’s completely different when you’re on the water. Boats, steering wheels, and engines don’t always go the way you want them to.

-Who is your teacher?

Miyazaki: Not yet. I got a lot of advice from seniors who were with me in that section.

-What is your task?

Miyazaki: Rather than technique, I think it shows weakness in terms of feelings. You have to come into the race with confidence. I want to polish my mental side.

– What are your private hobbies?

Miyazaki I didn’t say this. I listen to music evenly, and I have no fans of this person.

– Are you on good terms with your co-workers?

Miyazaki: Good. The other day, I went to Disney with (Ririka) Takei.

-Lastly, please tell us about the appeal of boat racing.

Miyazaki: I play basketball, so I really feel it, but there aren’t many sports where girls can compete on an equal footing with boys and have the potential to win. I would like you to come to the boat race course and feel that power.
