The first French medal at the World Athletics Championships is not for now. The French Aurélien Quinion however believed in it, but saw his hopes melt after receiving three penalties, then being finally disqualified, Thursday during the 35 km walk in Budapest.
Leaving after 15 km of racing, he maintained a lead of around thirty seconds over his pursuers for around fifteen kilometres. But he saw his credit melt and received two warnings, before the third, synonymous with a penalty, added 3’30” and buried his world title hopes.
A huge penalty, then a disqualification
Leaving the penalty area, Aurélien Quinion even received a new red card and was disqualified, 3 kilometers from the finish. He finished 14th at the Eugene Worlds in 2022, where the 35 km walk was on the program for the first time.
The race was finally won by the Spaniard Alvaro Martin, in 2h26’30”, ahead of the Ecuadorian Brian Daniel Pintado and the Japanese Masatora Kawano. The other Frenchman engaged, Kevin Campion, finished 15th. The French champion of discipline finished the race in 2h30’18”.
Martin and Pérez do the double
Four out of four for the Spanish walk: Alvaro Martin and María Pérez, already gold medalists in the 20 km walk five days ago, became world champions in the 35 km walk Thursday morning in Budapest.
Martin (29) crossed the finish line at Heroes’ Square in Budapest after a Spanish record 2h 24 min 30 sec, four seconds ahead of Ecuadorian Brian Daniel Pintado (2’24″34). Masatora Kawano completes the podium (2’25″12) of this non-Olympic event.
In the women’s race, María Pérez (27) won in 2h 38 min 40 sec, a championship record, ahead of the Peruvian Kimberly Garcia Leon (2’40″52) and the Greek Antigoni Ntrismpioti (2’43″22 ).
