French U20 Women’s Team Secures Victory Against Spain in Euro Semi-Finals

The French U20 women’s team won a great victory against Spain in the semi-finals of the Euro (47-75). Assured of being a medalist, she is now waiting to know her opponent for Sunday.

The day after their crazy quarter-final and concluded in extra time against Italy, France faced their historic rival Spain for a place in the final of the U20 Women’s EuroBasket. An appointment that the players of Elise Prod’homme did not miss by winning 47-75. They are now waiting to know their opponent for Sunday, the winning nation of the Serbia-Latvia duel. And the objective will be the same as this afternoon: achieve a perfect score in defense to win.

Because the Bleuettes have raised their level a little more in Klaipeda (Lithuania) with an already stifling start to the match for Spain without an offensive solution. Aggressive, the French even plunged their opponent into the penalty after four minutes when they kept their foul counter blank. With 14 rebounds captured including 7 offensive and 8 ball losses from the Spaniards, the first quarter dominated from start to finish by the Bleuettes ended with a score of 15 to 4.

And that never went well for Spain. Victim of shots from Ines Debroise and a counter-attack from Sara Roumy (24-10, 14th), La Roja had a hard time finding colors. But Gisela Sanchez somehow saved the Spaniards: 23-35 at halftime.

Upon returning from the locker room, the Spanish ordeal continued. Always serious in defense, the Bleuettes were better and better at opposing faults. Louise Preneau had the right to her moment of glory by scoring a three-pointer (45-28, 27th) followed by a lay-up scored with the fault. Then Sara Roumy increased the Bleuettes’ lead a little more before the start of the last act (34-50).

A last quarter launched wonderfully by Lucile Jerome’s three-pointer and which almost extinguished the last Spanish hopes. The French have in any case learned the lesson of their previous money time. Sara Roumy in the lead, who flourished in scoring (15 points). Then it was the turn of Axelle Merceron in post play then Ilona Hattab in transition, less visible today, to deliver the fatal blow. 42-70 with three minutes remaining. Without needing an incredible Carla Leite, France beat Spain.
