Dominicans Shine in Military Judo World Championship: Top Performances from Robert Florentino and Moira Morillo

Robert Florentino and Moira Morillo won gold and silver, in their respective categories, in the 41st edition of the Military Judo World Championship that took place in the Gioriver Arias Volleyball Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.

In addition to Florentino and Morillo, five other judokas from Quisqueyan won a bronze medal each. At the award ceremony, Robert was awarded as the most outstanding athlete, as well as Orlando Cruz, also from Dominican Republic, as the most outstanding referee.

The championship, organized by the Military and Police Sports Circle and the International Military Sports Council (CISM), included the participation of military athletes from a total of 16 countries.

With the seven medals (one gold, one silver, five bronze and 10 fifth places), the Dominican Republic ranked sixth overall in the world competition, which was held in coordination with the Dominican Judo Federation (Fedojudo ).

Robert Florentino, in the -90 kilos category, obtained gold by defeating Simón Gautschi, from Switzerland. The bronze was shared by Egor Andoni, from Russia, and Marcelo Silva Gómes, from Brazil.

Moira Morillo took the silver when she fell to Samah Hawa, from France, in the final bout of the test over 78 kilos. Samantha De Almeida, from Brazil, and Anzhela Gasparian, from Russia, took the bronze medals.

The five bronze metals were won by Coral Velasquez, in -52 kilos; Ana Rosa, in -57 kilos; Estefanía Soriano, at -48 kilos, and Iraima Silvestre, at -78 kilos, as well as the women’s team.

France, absolute champion

With a total of five gold, three silver and four bronze medals, the French representation took first place in the Military Judo World Championship.

The second place went to Russia, which added four gold, four silver and seven bronze medals, while the third place went to Brazil, which achieved two gold medals, the same amount of silver and 10 bronze.

Uzbekistan finished fourth with two gold and two silver medals, while fifth place went to Korea with two gold and three bronze medals.
