Dominican Basketball Team Strengthens Roster with NBA Player Karl Towns: Training for 2023 World Championship

With the integration of the Dominican Karl Towns, player of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA, the national basketball team is strengthened in the continuation of its training phase that takes place in Malaga, Spain, with a view to the 2023 Basketball World Championship.

Towns, who had agreed to participate in the World Cup, came with great joy to share with the coaches of the Dominican team, headed by Argentine Néstor -Ché- García, and the players that make up the national shortlist.

Yesterday he participated in his first training session with the entire squad, which took place at the Fuegirola Higueron Training Center, in Malaga, Spain.

The 2023 FIBA ​​World Championship will be played between August 25 and September 10 in three countries: Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia, and the Dominicans will have their first match on Friday the 25th when they clash against the locals from the Philippines.

With the return to the tricolor team of the stellar center of the Timberwolves, who will play in his second World Championship, after attending Spain 2014, and the first incursion of the NBA player, Lester Quiñones, the Dominican Republic will present a strengthened roster that will put an entire people to dream of obtaining a world title.

A total of 14 players, together with Towns and Quiñones, are in Málaga complying with the rigorous training sessions to be in optimal conditions for the following friendly matches that are coming up, after those carried out in a first phase in Santo Domingo against the University from Memphis, on August 2, and two later against the Puerto Rican squad, in Borinquen, and on the 10th and 12th vs. the Latvian national team.

This Friday, August 18, the national team will face the Spanish team, in the city of Granada, Andalusia, and the next day, the 19th, they will face Canada. His last preparation foray will be against Egypt, on the 22nd, but already installed in Manilas, Philippines.

The Dominican shortlist who is in Malaga is also made up of Andrés Félix, Ángel Luis Delgado, Jean Montero, the team captain Víctor Liz, Eloy Vargas, LJ Figuereo, Rigoberto Mendoza, Gerardo Suero, Luis Santos, Antonio Peña, Gelvis Solano and Ángel Núñez, who joined over the weekend.

Engineer Rafael Uribe, president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), revealed that the 12 players who will see action in the World Cup will be selected on August 20.

Uribe said that in this World Championship there will be seven places for the 2024 Olympic Games, two for the American Continent, two for Europe and one for the continents of Asia, Africa and Oceania.

From America, the United States, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Brazil will compete in the 2023 World Cup, and the two best places in general will get the place in the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Dominicans are in Group A along with Italy, Angola and the local Philippines.
