The now Mallorca footballer explained the reasons that led him to leave the blue and white team

The departure of Sergi Darder from Espanyol has been marked by controversy. The until now blue and white captain was announced as a new Mallorca player, even making his debut, without having said goodbye to his old club. Now, Darder has issued an official statement explaining the reasons for his departure. “I would have liked to say goodbye in another way, but it could not be“, the statement begins.
Unlike what happened in the last descent, Darder will not accompany Espanyol on their adventure in the Second Division. “After 6 years that have been a mountain of emotions, with descents, promotions and European competitions, I felt that it was time for a change for the good of all. Last season was very hard for everyone, also on a personal level.”
This feeling expressed by Darder was evident in the match against Valencia, when the captain broke down in tears when the relegation was certified. “I gave everything I could both on and off the game, I experienced the descent as one more fan and, as captain, with a great feeling of responsibility. For all this, and for my personal and family health, I have needed to step aside to try to be happy.”
Darder also wanted to justify his silence, much criticized by Espanyol fans. “If I have kept silent all this time, it has been because that is how we decided with the club. I always wanted to do things in the best possible way, looking for the best way out for both parties. Although in the last week there were situations that I did not like, my love for this shield is too great enough to hold any kind of grudge for everything that happened”.
