Montreal/Toronto – Petra Kvitová was eliminated at the tennis tournament in Montreal as the last Czech representative in the round of 16. She lost the match with Swiss Belinda Bencicová, postponed from Thursday, in which both rivals needed treatment in the third set, 7:6, 3:6, 1:6.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitová won the opening set in 70 minutes in a tie-break 7:3. However, the seeded seventh seed started the second set with a loss of serve and did not overcome the deficit, despite having five break points. In the end, on the other hand, she lost service again.

At the beginning of the third set, it seemed for a while that the world number nine might be sent to the quarterfinals by an injury to her opponent, who slightly sprained her ankle at 1:0 in the second set. Olympic champion Kvitova brought ice and waited with her for treatment.

After her leg was taped, the Swiss was able to continue the match and was able to benefit from her opponent’s inaccuracies. Kvitová won the second game on serve and maintained her lead. The Czech number one, on the other hand, repeatedly clutched her right hip and groin with a painful grimace and also requested treatment at 1:4. After that, she lost serve for the second time and Bencic finished off the duel with a clean game.

Šwiateková is in the semi-finals in Montreal, Rybakinová finished at three in the morning

After the elimination of two Czech female tennis players, world number one Iga Šwiateková also dealt with the American Danielle Collins in Montreal and is in the semi-finals. The conqueror of Karolín Plíšková and Muchová defeated Collins 6:3, 4:6, 6:2 on Friday and claimed her 50th jubilee win of the season.

The 22-year-old Polish woman Šwiateková is aiming for her sixteenth title in Montreal, this year she won four at Roland Garros, at home in Warsaw, Doha and Stuttgart. Her next opponent will be world number three Jessica Pegula, who defeated her doubles partner and American compatriot Coco Gauffova 6:2, 5:7 and 7:5.

At three o’clock in the morning local time, Jelena Rybakinová from Kazakhstan was happy about the progress. She and Darja Kasatkina battled for three and a half hours before winning 10:8 in the tie-break of the deciding set. Russia had one match point, Rybakinova used the fifth. Despite the night, several hundred spectators remained in the stands.

She will play against another Russian opponent Lyudmila Samsonova for the final. She defeated the former Kvitová Bencicová twice 6:4.

After a year, Alcaraz again lost to Paul in Canada, and Medvedev was also eliminated in the quarterfinals

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz crashed out just like he did a year ago at the Masters tournament in Canada with Tommy Paul. This time, the twelfth-seeded American eliminated the Spanish tennis player and Wimbledon champion after sets 6:3, 4:6, 6:3 in the quarterfinals in Toronto, last year it was in the second round in Montreal. It also ended Alcaraz’s 14 game winning streak.

Two weeks before defending his title at the US Open, the 20-year-old Spaniard is not in optimal shape. “I definitely didn’t play good matches here. Now I just have to train to be better. I’ll take a lot of lessons from this tournament,” Alcaraz said after failing to reach the semifinals for only the second time this season.

Six years older, Paul made it this far at the Masters for the first time. “It helps a lot if you beat your opponent once before. This setup is important,” said Paul, who is ranked 14th. He will play against Jannik Sinner from Italy for the final in Toronto.

In addition to Alcaraz, the second seed Daniil Medvedev is also surprisingly missing from the semi-finals. The Russian tennis player was not enough against Alex de Minaur and lost 6:7, 5:7. The Australian will be challenged by Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich today.
