Concamin asks to avoid consequences on producers for panel on transgenic corn – El Sol de México

The Confederation of Industrial Chambers of the United Mexican States (Concamin) expressed its concern at the request for a solution panel by the United States on the restrictions imposed on imports of transgenic corn and the economic consequences.

“We view with concern the installation of this panel, since non-compliance with the issue will mainly impact Mexican agricultural producers through the imposition of tariffs by the US government,” said José Abugaber Andonie, president of the Confederation at a press conference.

This Thursday, the Office of the Trade Representative (USTR, for its acronym in English) requested the creation of a dispute settlement panel within the framework of the T-MEC on the restrictions imposed by Mexico on imports of genetically modified corn.

The Ministry of Economy responded that it was notified of the decision of the United States Government, and insisted that the national regulation is consistent with the commitments signed in the T-MEC, and that the measures challenged by the North American country do not have commercial effects.

“The Ministry of Economy is prepared to defend the Mexican position before this international panel,” the agency said in a statement.

The agency in charge of Raquel Buenrostro explained that the United States considers that certain provisions of Mexico to restrict the import of glyphosate and genetically modified corn may be incompatible with provisions of the TMEC, but “Mexico does not agree with the position of the United States.”

For its part, Concamin asked to avoid reaching the panel’s ruling against Mexico, since this resolution will have negative consequences for the economy, such as possible tariffs by the US government that would mainly affect Mexican agricultural producers.

“We call on the Mexican government to avoid a negative scenario for our economy and compliance with the national legal framework and international trade agreements for the benefit of companies,” said Abugaber Andonie.

Concamin assured that they trust that the Ministry of Economy can resolve this dispute with the US government, considering that no country worldwide has questioned the safety and security of transgenic agricultural products for human consumption.

Tariffs are to prevent invasion of Chinese products

On the other hand, the president of Concamin reiterated that the tariff measures imposed on products from the textile, footwear and clothing industries are the result of dialogues and meetings with chambers and associations in order to support the Mexican industry and stop the invasion of products chinese in the market

“We welcome these tariff measures, because we do not want the invasion of Chinese products that arrive in Mexico illegally to continue increasing, since most of them are products of illegal international trade practices,” added Abugaber Andonie.

Under the decree, tariffs of between five and 25 percent will be imposed on various items including footwear, textiles and clothing. And according to Concamin, it was agreed that the chambers and associations that sign the agreement do not increase the prices of their products.
