Companies seek to employ young people, but reject them due to lack of experience – El Sol de México

Young people are the ones who have the most problems to enter the labor market. Due to a lack of experience, they face an even more complicated landscape than the average worker. Today, the unemployment rate is 6.4 percent for young people, twice the national rate, which is 3.5 percent.

And ironically, 80 percent of employers are looking to hire young people, but more than half are having trouble finding that talent.

And where is the problem? Well, they lack the appropriate knowledge, this is experience, they do not have command of at least one language and they present an absence of soft skills such as critical thinking, project management, willingness to collaborate and problem solving.

This was stated in an interview, today on International Youth Day, by Tania Arita, director of Recruitment at ManpowerGroup Talent Solutions, who said that currently, the requirements demanded by companies have changed.

“Skills are already more relevant to access a job. Although formal education helps to acquire knowledge, soft skills encourage young people to have a formal job”.

He explained to El Sol de México: “University degrees become obsolete in a period of 5 years, in five years, so staying trained and continuing learning is a habit that is recommended for professional growth and improving offers. long-term wages.

And as an example of how valuable it is to have a language other than Spanish, he commented:

“I am in charge of recruiting within ManpowerGroup. They ask me for an accountant whose salary ranges from 15,000 to 18,000 pesos. When he has a second language or a technical skill as a data developer, it automatically goes up to 80 thousand pesos ”.

He insists: “Today for companies, experience and technical and soft skills are more important than a university degree.”

Of course, a university degree is important, but experience is much more. And one of the challenges for young people to be able to enter the workforce is that lack of experience; of course, speak another language and have technical knowledge as well.

He argued that experience plays a very important role. Precisely, one of the recommendations that ManpowerGroup makes is that young people should join training programs if they are studying. And with this, at the end of their studies to be able to occupy a job position and a desired salary.

TO STUDY AND TO WORK

Many companies, both global and regional, have these training programs or “talent hotbeds”, where young people can enter the workforce while they study, learning in a workplace.

This is important, because they gain experience that today is one of the most important challenges for which young people cannot enter the workforce.

Are there figures for young people who leave the classroom and cannot be inserted into the workforce?

-Yes, in the last study we found that more than 60 percent of the graduates at the end of their university studies, having no experience makes them have problems to be inserted in the labor market.

It is one of the recommendations as ManpowerGroup, that together with the study you acquire experience throughout the student life. Being employed as an assistant, an intern, as a volunteer, that makes you gain experience.

Today we see that the Call Centers play an important role: they have different schedules, different shifts and make it easy for them to continue their studies. So while you gain experience and skills.

Another very important issue for young people to remain employable is that they can count on soft skills such as problem solving, emotional intelligence, they play an important role in the workplace.

Also everything that has to do with technical skills such as data analysis, cyber security, etc.

When we are invited to give talks to young people, we advise them on that part. And they must also attend technical workshops that are trainers. Take courses that last one, two years; or short workshops where you can acquire that knowledge and learning about the use and interpretation of data, which today is very important for companies to hire.

How are young students motivated to gain work experience?

-One of the ways is to tell them that the more experience you have, you can get a job offer much sooner or the salary can be a differentiator.

I am in charge of recruiting within MPG and they ask me for an accountant whose basic salary ranges from 15,000 to 18,000 pesos. When that accountant has a second language or technical skills as a data developer, it automatically goes up to 80 thousand pesos.

One motivation may be that the more technical and soft skills along with experience you have, it will be much easier to enter the world of work and have visibly differentiating salaries.

The crucial thing is to acquire the technical skills. At MPG we have coined a term: “Near Skills”, which is constantly training yourself. This is you don’t need a classroom or someone constantly telling you what to do.

It is the ability that you have to want to take more knowledge and not become obsolete. Soft skills will always last.
