CNA calls for debate on transgenic corn panel in T-MEC – El Sol de México

The request for a solution panel on the restrictions on imports of transgenic corn from the United States should be a “technical and scientific debate, and not trade policy,” considered the National Agricultural Council (CNA).

Farmers maintain that the Mexican government’s 2022 decree on transgenic maize already addressed most of the potential problems in the trade of these grains, and both the livestock and agro-industrial industries have continued to import maize without interruption or impact.

In December 2020, the Government of Mexico published a decree establishing January 31, 2024 as the deadline for the use of glyphosate and prohibiting the import of transgenic grains. This, despite the fact that the United States is the main supplier of this type of grain to Mexico.

On Thursday, the United States government announced the creation of a dispute resolution panel within the framework of the T-MEC for the prohibition of our country to import transgenic corn.

On this, the CNA requested the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (Conacyt) and the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) to scientifically demonstrate the alleged damage of transgenics to health.

“The use of new technologies and science are fundamental to face the challenges of large-scale production and satisfy the demand for food in Mexico and in the world,” says the CNA statement.

According to a report by the Agricultural Markets Consulting Group (GCMA), imports of white corn from the US to Mexico decreased after the decree.
