As of: 08/10/2023 6:26 p.m

The world’s best chess player Magnus Carlsen took revenge after losing to German Vincent Keymer – now it’s time for the tie-break

Carlsen won the second duel in the fourth round of the World Cup in Baku. The 18-year-old Keymer had surprised the Norwegian in the first game and beat him for the first time in his career. The jump-off, initially with two games of rapid chess, will take place on Friday.

Keymar in time trouble

Keymer, who went into the endgame with the black pieces in a slightly worse position, overlooked a concentration error by Carlsen in the middlegame. Carlsen increased the pressure while Keymer ran into time trouble. Finally Keymer gave up with ten seconds on the clock and in an almost hopeless position.

Carlsen was world champion from 2013 to 2023 before he decided not to defend his title earlier this year for reasons of motivation. In the first game against Keymer he made a serious mistake on move 36.

Top eight in Candidates Tournament

The World Cup is one of the most important tournaments in international chess. Over three and a half weeks, 206 participants in the open tournament and 103 participants in the women’s tournament determined winners. The top three qualify for the eight-man Candidates Tournament, with the winner going up against World Champion Ding Liren.
