Champions: Rosetti, no more protests and insults to referees – Football

“We are all tired of unsportsmanlike attitudes: we will tell our referees to be tough, to apply the rules in an important way”. This was stated by Roberto Rosetti, UEFA designator, speaking to Sky from Montecarlo a few hours before the UEFA draw for the Champions League. In the guidelines for next season, Rosetti explained, there are indications against the excesses of protests, players and benches. “It is a guideline shared with all the European chief referees, including Rocchi: we want good behaviour, which is an example, from the players. We are tired of protests, situations of insults to the referees, encircles, simulation. It is not just a speech for today or for next season, but a line to follow to leave a mark”.

Another indication, the coup d’état and the penalty. “We reflected on last season – explained Rosetti-: not every touch of the hand is a penalty, the players are athletes, they also move with their arms. If the movement is appropriate, it shouldn’t be punished. Absolutely different if the position of a hand or arm is unnatural. However, we ask the referee more and more to understand the dynamics of the game, the biodynamics of the movement and integrate the objective facts with the evaluation of the dynamics of the action”.

Finally, UEFA has launched a recruitment campaign for young referees. “The status quo of refereeing in Europe is not positive, more than 40,000 referees are missing. With this campaign, from UEFA and all the European federations, we want to invite young boys and girls to seize the opportunity of arbitration, which is a school of life”.
