Belgium Claims Bronze in Mixed Relay Triathlon at Seine Pollution Serves as Warning

No diving into the polluted water of the Seine, but an extra round for the participants of the mixed relay. Each athlete thus had 900 meters of running, 5.8 km of cycling and another 1.8 km of running on his plate.

Belgium went to Paris with Arnaud Mengal, Jolien Vermeylen, Jelle Geens and Claire Michel to measure themselves against the top countries a year before the Games.

The Belgian Hammers immediately started strong. After the first change, Vermeylen was fourth. She advanced at the top and then let strong runner Geens run more firmly to silver.

Michel had to hold on to a medal as the final runner with the Belgians. That succeeded, partly thanks to a collapse of the French Emma Lombardi. The Belgian finished 18 seconds behind the numbers 1 and 2.

Germany’s Laura Lindemann and British Beth Potter provided the show for the win. After a thriller, the first took the gold for her country in the sprint.
