Feyenoord-Rotterdam coach Arne Slot will follow in Jürgen Klopp’s footsteps as Liverpool FC coach. The Dutchman revealed this himself at a press conference.

On Sunday, Jürgen Klopp will play his last competitive game as coach of Liverpool FC against Wolverhampton Wanderers and then say goodbye after more than eight and a half years. It is now clear who will take over the traditional club’s sidelines.

Arne Slot, still coach of Feyenoord Rotterdam, had recently emerged as the top candidate and ended the rumor mill on Friday. “I can confirm that I will be the new coach there,” said the 45-year-old Dutchman at a press conference, according to various media reports. The official press releases from both clubs would be sent out shortly. Confirmation from Liverpool is still pending.

Last week, English and Dutch media unanimously reported that the Premier League club had reached an agreement on a move with Slot’s current employer. According to the Daily Mail, around 10 million euros are being discussed as a transfer fee for the 45-year-old. Klopp also spoke positively about his possible successor. “I like the way his team plays football. Everything I’ve heard about him is that he’s a good guy, a good coach.”

Slot once made more than 200 appearances in the Eredivisie as a player. His first stop as head coach was AZ Alkmaar in 2019 before moving to Rotterdam in 2021. In his first season at Feyenoord, he led the team directly to the first final of the Europa Conference League (lost 1-0 against AS Roma). In his second season they won the Eredivisie championship title. This season the club won the Dutch KNVB Cup.

Jürgen Klopp: “I know it will be hard”

Klopp had previously revealed that the last few days before his final game as Liverpool coach were taking a toll on him. “It’s the most intense week of my life, I’ve said goodbye so many times now,” said the 56-year-old at a press conference for the English Premier League club: “There were great moments and you don’t have to pretend It would be a normal week, because it isn’t.” Looking ahead to Sunday’s game, he said: “I know it will be hard.”

And then? Klopp recently emphasized that he doesn’t have a plan. That would tie him down too much; he just wants to enjoy a kind of freedom that he hasn’t had for decades. Meeting friends, traveling, watching football, completely neutral. He will go back to work at some point, but for now: “I’m not available. I’m just gone. We’ll see how long it takes.”
