Matej Kovar joins Bayer 04 Leverkusen as the new goalkeeper. Although all parties involved agree, the deal is not official yet. For Manchester United, however, this includes a buyback clause for the Czech U-21 international.

He has long been in Leverkusen, completed the obligatory medical check on Thursday and yet Matej Kovar is still waiting. Although the Czech national goalkeeper, Bayer 04 and Manchester United have agreed to transfer the 23-year-old, the formalities for the deal have not yet been completed by the English side.
That’s how long Kovar has to be patient to start his new job. In which he will initially also be in a sporty waiting position. Because even if he is supposed to be serious competition for first-choice goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, coach Xabi Alonso has already stated that captain Hradecky is important for Bayer 04 and that he is happy with the 33-year-old veteran. A change in the goalkeeper position is not imminent.
The young eagle? Kovar real challenger for Hradecky
On sight this may be the case. Because unlike his predecessors like Patrick Pentz and Andrej Lunev, Kovar should act as a real challenger for Hradecky (contract until 2026) and replace him as number 1 in the future. Kovar is to play the role of young René Adler, who once slipped into the role of regular goalkeeper at Bayer 04 as a goalkeeper.
So Kovar is coming to play for the Europa League participants sooner or later. However, how long that will be depends not only on the duration of the contract, which runs until 2027, and which the 1.96 meter man receives.
The transfer agreement between the clubs gives Manchester United a buyback option for Kovar, for whom Bayer is paying a good five million euros, which can increase to over eight million with bonuses. Accordingly, the traditional English club has the opportunity to bring the keeper back for a double-digit million sum.
