Winner in the dispute – Schröder’s new power in the national team

The national basketball team has started preparing for the World Cup. The dispute between Dennis Schröder and Maximilian Kleber is still a big issue. The association positions itself clearly. The recently crumbling harmony seems saved.
Criticism, controversy and the resignation of a possible key player at the World Cup: On the way to the medal they were aiming for in Asia, the German basketball players made a false start even before the start of preparation. Their captain Dennis Schröder, who scared away fellow player Maximilian Kleber for the most important tournament of the year with his public criticism, has demonstratively strengthened them at the German Basketball Association (DBB).
The DBB and national coach Gordon Herbert positioned themselves quickly and relatively clearly in the case of Schröder vs. Kleber – pro Schröder. “Dennis showed strength with his apology. Dennis takes great care of his teammates. He is very proud and honored to represent his country,” said Herbert in a statement from the association.
The head coach did not mention the name Kleber, who reacted to the harsh words with a World Cup cancellation. The association wrote without much regret: “Ultimately, Maximilian Kleber made the decision he expressed in his statement. There is nothing to add.”

The harmony that led the team led by Schröder to bronze in 2022 crumbled a good month before the start of the World Cup on August 25 in Okinawa, Japan. What happened?

Schröder verbally attacked Kleber in the “Got Nexxt” podcast and, among other things, denounced Kleber’s cancellation of the home European Championship: “Maxi wasn’t there last year. If you haven’t made a commitment – that was actually the message for all of us – then you won’t be there next year either ” to have.

Schröder then apologized twice, but Kleber’s decision stood. It is not his goal to “destroy the good chemistry in the team from last summer,” said Kleber, who plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. “I also don’t want to become a source of distraction.”
Schröder started preparing in Bonn with 17 other colleagues this Monday, and on Saturday (7 p.m.) the first World Cup friendly will take place there against Sweden. The Toronto Raptors’ point guard no longer wants to comment on the criticism.

Others have long since made themselves strong for Schröder, who, after Dirk Nowitzki left, has become the defining figure of the next basketball generation – and has expanded his power even further this summer. Veteran Robin Benzing was replaced as captain by Schröder last year and now calls his successor a friend.
“He’s grown even more. I played with him for the national team when he was a rookie. Every player has to learn a lot and gain experience. He’s matured, he’s leading the team incredibly,” said Benzing.

Schröder’s choice of words was not without controversy, Benzing also admitted that. “Just like Dennis is: He always says directly what’s going on. Sometimes it might be a bit rash, sometimes it should be said a little differently. But I don’t think he meant it badly.”
The goal of the captain, to start with the entire European Championship team from 2022 at the World Cup, can no longer be achieved since Monday: winger Nick Weiler-Babb is out for the entire summer due to an unspecified injury.
