Co-favourite Australia started the basketball world championship on Friday (08/25/2023) with an easy win and put itself in a good starting position before the duel with Germany.
Led by playmaker Josh Giddey, the Olympic bronze medalist in Okinawa won 98:72 (45:40) against Finland. Giddey contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to the expected success against the European Championship quarter-finalists.
Mills top scorer with 25 points
In front of 5,729 spectators, the NBA professional narrowly missed the first so-called triple double (two-digit values in three statistical categories) in World Cup history.
The Australians’ best thrower was veteran Patty Mills with 25 points. Lauri Markkanen scored 19 points for the Finns. The Finns’ hopefuls made too many misses from the three-point line.
