Attempted sabotage at Vuelta: Four people arrested

Spanish police arrested four men after foiling oil sabotage at the Vuelta. The suspects were taken into custody in a wooded area near the Catalan city of Suria on Saturday as they prepared to dump 400 liters of “motor oil-like liquid” onto the street from two drums.

The barrels and a hose leading to the street “were hidden in the vegetation,” the Spanish National Police statement said. The accused are attributed to the Catalan independence movement, which describes the cycle race’s passage through the region as “colonial”.

The four people were charged with membership in a criminal organization, disturbing public order and environmental offences. They are at large after a court date in Solsana on Monday but must stay away from the race.

The third stage on Monday, won by former world champion Remco Evenepoel, led from Suria to Arinsal in Andorra.
