Athletics World Championships, the blues of the 4×400 are seventh – Other Sports

Two more top eight finishes at the World Cup in Budapest give Italy an overall team performance not seen since the 1999 Seville edition. The Azzurri finish with 13 finalists, equaling the result of 24 years ago, and a total of 51 points that in the ‘placing table’ holds eighth place ex-aequo with Australia and Holland. Thanks also to the seventh places obtained in the final evening by both 4×400 relays. Among the women Alice Mangione, Anna Polinari, Alessandra Bonora and Giancarla Trevisan manage to cross the finish line in 3:24.98, just over a second from the national record of 3:23.86 signed yesterday (with Ayomide Folorunso in the second fraction) while she wins the ‘Holland in 3:20.72 thanks to the formidable final comeback by Femke Bol.
The men’s blue quartet lined up with Edoardo Scotti, Riccardo Meli, Lorenzo Benati and Davide Re finished seventh in 3:01.23, without Alessandro Sibilio who had run in battery, in the race that sees the United States prevail with 2:57.31.
In Italy’s balance, the 4 medals stand out (1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze) as has not happened since Edmonton 2001 (but in that case 1-1-2) for the thirteenth position in the medal table, dominated by the United States with 12 gold , 8 silvers, 9 bronzes (29 total medals) ahead of the 4 golds of Canada and Spain. The USA is also the undisputed leader in the points standings with 277 ahead of Jamaica (139) and Kenya (112).
