Andy Murray Speaks Out on Grand Slam Schedules and Prepares for US Open Debut

After retiring before his match against Jannik Sinner in Toronto and dropping out in Cincinnati, many doubts arose regarding Andy Murray’s presence at the 2023 US Open, but the British himself is the one who confirms that everything is going well.

Murray complains about the schedules in the Grand Slams

“I think in general it is not good for anyone. Obviously, when players complain about something, people tell us to shut up or tell us to go to work in a warehouse from 9 to 17. I get it. I know I’m lucky to play tennis, but at 4 in the morning I don’t think it helps the sport much, when you know that everyone is leaving because they have to take public transport home and you finish a match with 10% of public.

It is something that is not seen in other sports. It’s clearly wrong. And the reason is purely economic, it’s not because the people who run the tournaments think it’s good for the players, it’s not. They do it for economic reasons”, explains Andy Murray to Tennis Majors, recalling, for example, that clash against Thanasi Kokkinakis in Melbourne that ended at 4 in the morning.

a necessary change

“If the Grand Slams want to start the night sessions at 7:30 p.m., if they want to play two women’s matches at that time, that’s fine. If they want to play a men’s game, then I think you can only play one game, unless it started earlier. Wimbledon obviously has to change the start time of the matches and move it forward, stop having a 20-minute break between matches. It may happen on occasion, but every effort is made to prevent it. I think it’s fair for the players, because you can’t expect someone to recover if you finish at 4:30 in the morning.”

Physically recovered for the US Open

“The last five or six days of training have gone very well. I have not had any problem with the serve. It’s obvious that you can’t go a week without taking out and then put yourself to the fullest, you have to go little by little. It hasn’t been perfect in that sense, but the abdominal area has been good.” Murray will debut at the 2023 US Open against French player Corentin Moutet.
