World Swimming Championships: Meilutīte Breaks World Record, Söström Claims Gold, and USA Dominates Relay Events

A day earlier, in the semi-finals, Meilutīte managed to repeat the previous world record, which belonged to the Italian Benedetta Pilato, but in the final competition, the Lithuanian finished in 29.16 seconds and broke the world record by 0.14 seconds.

The second place was taken by the American swimmer Lily King, who lost to Meilutīte by 0.78 seconds, but the bronze medal was won by Pilato, who was 0.88 seconds behind.

Meilutīte won the gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke at this championship, becoming a three-time world champion.

On the other hand, American Hunter Armstrong won the gold in men’s 50-meter backstroke, who covered the distance in 25.05 seconds. The winner’s compatriot Justin Ress took second place (24.24 seconds), while the top three was completed by China’s Xu Jiayu (24.50 seconds).

Tunisian Ahmed Hafnaoui finished in 14 minutes and 31.54 seconds in the 1500 meters freestyle and broke the world championship and African record. American Bobby Finke and Australian Samuel Short finished second and third, respectively, losing 0.05 and 5.74 seconds.

Swedish swimmer Sara Söström won gold in the 50-meter freestyle, completing the distance in 23.62 seconds. The day before, she managed to break the world record in this distance (23.62 seconds). Australian Shane Jack took the silver, while China’s Zhang Yufei rounded out the top three, losing 0.48 and 0.53 seconds to her followers, respectively.

In the 400-meter individual medley, Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh was by far the fastest, completing the distance in four minutes and 27.11 seconds. American Katie Grimes dropped 4.30 seconds to be second, while Australia’s Jenna Forrester was 5.19 seconds behind to finish third.

At the end of the World Championships, in the men’s 4×100 meter relay medley, the USA swimmers Ryan Murphy, Nick Fink, Deer Rose and Jack Alexi won the gold, finishing in three minutes and 27.20 seconds.

In the women’s competition in the 4×100 meter relay in the complex swimming, the top honors went to Americans Reagan Smith, Lily King, Gretchen Walsh and Kate Douglas. The USA swimmers finished in three minutes and 52.08 seconds.
