The German soccer world champions of 1990 have arranged to meet for a class reunion. In the group photo, one of the DFB heroes drew attention again.

Grassau im Chiemgau – The black, red and gold football heart is currently having a hard time. The men’s national team is one year ahead of the EM 2024 deep in crisis. The U21s had to give up early at the European Championships. And the women messed them up World Cup dress rehearsal against Zambia.

World champions from 1990 meet in Chiemgau – Franz Beckenbauer is missing

It is all the more important for DFB fans to remember past successes with joy. One of them is of course winning the 1990 World Cup in Italy. The team from that time has been coming together for a kind of class reunion for several years. The same was true this summer – 33 years to the day after the triumph on July 8, 1990. On that magical night in Rome, Andreas Brehme sewed the third star onto the German chest with his converted penalty against Argentina.

The team boss at the time, Franz Beckenbauer, was unable to attend for health reasons. Beckenbauer’s wife Heidi initiated and organized the meeting. 19 players from the World Cup squad were present, only Bodo Illgner, Jürgen Kohler and Günter Hermann were missing. Lothar Matthäus, captain of the 1990 heroes, shared some pictures from the recent gathering on his Instagram account. The post also appeared on the Beckenbauer channel. “Jubilee event of the world champions from 1990” was written under the photos.

The leading actors from back then – Matthäus, Brehme, Pierre Littbarski, Jürgen Klinsmann, Klaus Augenthaler and Co. – naturally also gathered again for a large group photo. And one world champion in particular caught everyone’s attention – and not because he was placed in the middle of the picture: Karl-Heinz Riedle.

The former striker had already made headlines at previous class reunions. The reason: being still youthful appearance!

“Why doesn’t Karl-Heinz Riedle actually age?” Fans praise the 1990 world champion

Born in the Allgäu, he is now a proud 57 years old, but unlike some of his teammates from the past, you don’t notice his age at all. Tanned skin, black-grey hair, a radiant smile – the fans also have words of appreciation for “Air Riedle”.

On Twitter, for example, under the photo it says: “Why doesn’t Karl-Heinz Riedle actually age?”, or: “The age difference between Karl-Heinz Riedle and his former playmates is constantly increasing”.

Karl-Heinz Riedle and the magical night of Munich

During his career, Riedle was active for Werder Bremen, Lazio Rome, Borussia Dortmund, FC Liverpool and FC Fulham. He scored his goals everywhere – also thanks to his header skills, which eventually earned him his nickname. Riedle spent the most successful years in Germany: with Werder and BVB he was German champion three times.

In 1997 he won the Champions League final against Juventus Turin in Munich – it was the game of his life. Riedle scored twice within five minutes and led the black and yellow team onto the road to victory. Riedle is now an international brand ambassador for Borussia, and he also works as an expert on football broadcasts for the RTL TV station.
