Women’s World Cup: Loudspeaker statement for “more transparency”

The top referees of the world football association FIFA are convinced of the usefulness of the loudspeaker declaration at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which begins on Thursday.

“We want to create more transparency and more understanding for the referee’s decision,” said referee boss Pierluigi Collina on Tuesday in Sydney: “The tests with the referees here on the training ground went very well. We are very confident.”

In the final round, decisions are explained in English by the respective referees over the stadium microphones based on video evidence – similar to the NFL professional football league. FIFA had already tried the procedure at the Club World Cup and the Men’s U20 World Cup. Specifically, the decision, the reason for it, the players involved and a brief description of the incident are announced.

It is expected that the loudspeaker declaration will also be used in the national leagues such as the Bundesliga in the medium term. “After the World Cup we will discuss what is best for the future,” said Collina.

It is also certain that the women’s World Cup will have overruns similar to the men’s finals in Qatar in order to combat time wasting.
