89ers III Show Strong Will in Double Header Sweep in Bremen

With a real show of will, especially in the first game of the double header in Bremen, the 89ers III got another sweep.

The omens weren’t good at first, as coach Biertümpel’s team had to accept two cancellations at short notice. With only 11 players we went to last year’s champions Bremen Dockers, who have a mix of talented, young players and older, experienced players.

In Game 1, veteran Norm Elker went to the mound against Bremen. “The Dockers are strong, so the defense has to be there right from the start. “Unfortunately that didn’t always work,” said Biertümpel after the game.

Baseball is life. The rest is just details….

The 89ers made major mistakes in each of the first three innings. There were also good hits from the Dockers. Nevertheless, Fossy and his occasionally strong defense managed to ensure that Bremen were only able to score one run per inning. The guests also didn’t have much to gain at bat in the first two innings against the young Bremen pitcher. The 89ers were only able to score in the third inning and finally equalized in the fourth.

While Fossy became stronger and the defense was now more secure, the Bremen pitcher weakened. With the score tied at 3-3 after five innings, reliever Robert Buschtöns came on the mound. The Dockers had difficulties with the change of pace, while the second Bremen pitcher was too inconsistent. With a lot of patience and a now better attitude, the 89ers scored further runs in the sixth (6:3) and seventh (10:3).

Buschi remained fully focused and only allowed one more run to make the final score 10:4. “We didn’t get into the game well at first and left too much behind, but then we fought really hard into the game,” Biertümpel continued. The record of only five hits (Bremen: 10) and four errors (Bremen: 1) clearly speaks against the 89ers, the morale and the will for the Braunschweig team.

In the second game, the 89ers got off to a strong start and took advantage of Bremen’s pitching continuing to decline. Five runs in the first inning provided a comforting lead as Buschi, the starting pitcher, gave up just one hit and one run.

And the 89ers also went up in the second inning (13:1). In that inning, Maxim took over on the mound. He did a very good job there, gave Bremen few chances and pitched confidently until the end of the game (2 hours). With 16:3, a clear victory for the 89ers was clear early on. Biertümpel said: “We benefited from the fact that the Dockers were missing two pitchers. We definitely have to work on our batting power and definitely reduce our mistakes. Maxim’s good performance should be highlighted.”

The 89ers continue their derby against the Wolfsburg Blackbirds next Sunday at home. Then the coach’s instructions should be implemented urgently.
